Goji berries can be found in China, and are the oldest cultivated fruits. They are also known as wolfberries and Chinese plums. They are native to Asia and can be found growing wild all over Asia. Goji derives its name from the Tibetan word “gom”, which means “to grow”. They are known in Japan as Kuzuimaki.
Around 300 BC, the gojiberry was mentioned for the first time in ancient Chinese literature. Although it was primarily used as a food source for many people, some medical uses were also documented. Goji berries contain high levels of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, fiber, amino acid, polysaccharides, enzymes, and other nutrients. They are high in anthocyanins. Goji berries have many benefits including anti-aging, immunity system support, antioxidant protection and heart health benefits. They also provide energy boost, memory improvement, weight loss aid and skin healthy.
Goji berries are often referred to superfoods due to their nutritional value. This fruit is rich in vitamins C, beta-carotene (vitamin A6), calcium, iron and magnesium. It also contains significant amounts vitamin B6 and choline. Because of their similar taste and texture, goji berries can be compared with blueberries. Both blueberries and gojiberries are rich in ellagic acid which is a powerful cancer-fighting chemical that can be found in plants, particularly nuts and seeds.
